Yoga is an ideal pre- and post-natal exercise. It increases energy, relieves muscle aches and headaches, improves circulation, relaxes the mind and improves sleep. It also reduces water retention, eases heartburn, nausea and constipation and strengthens birthing muscles. An added incentive of attending pre- and post-natal yoga classes is a supportive environment. Whether a woman does natural childbirth or not, yoga prepares you for a conscious birth,” maintains Stacie Doorek, a yoga instructor who teaches at the Presidio YMCA in San Francisco and has just begun leading a weekly prenatal class at the newly opened Parents Center in San Rafael. The aches that make some people’s pregnancy so miserable can be decreased or eradicated with yoga. It can reduce swelling in your joints, prepare you for birth and also prepare you for motherhood,” she continues. Again, modifications are typically recommended for women during pregnancy, so Doorek recommends that pregnant women seek out prenatal classes. They’re not only good for building a sense of community; they also spend a lot of time teaching specific poses – like squats – that help open the pelvic floor and prepare for labor. People come to yoga during pregnancy because they know it’s so healthy for them and the baby,” says Doorek, who herself is a lifelong practitioner and instructor of Sunlight Yoga, based in San Francisco and Marin County. "Then it becomes a tool you bring to your daily life, something you can do throughout all stages of life.”

“Stacie is amazing. If you are new to yoga or you want to improve your technique, Stacie is the person to guide you thorough the process. I tried so many yoga instructors and I couldn't get into yoga until I took one of Stacie's classes. She is amazing!"Danny B. Student at Corporate Classes at Lucas Films; San Francisco, CA 2005 -present“Stacie is a great yoga instructor- one of my favorites. Her practice has a great balance of the physical, mental and spiritual sides of yoga- focusing not only on asanas but breathing and meditation as well. She is very knowledgeable and does a great job of describing the poses and different ways to get more out of the practice. I love the fact that she’s “in tune” with the class and the people. She will give extra help to those that need it and will make modifications for those that are injured or pregnant. She brings enough variety every week to keep things fresh. Her yoga class is my weekly salvation- I can’t recommend her enough…”

“Stacie's style is gentle but effective. She guides you through poses with just the right amount of encouragement. My experience was in a group class at a large SF Health Club. She takes the time to walk around in order to provide personal attention. I can only imagine how much more effective she is with a smaller group or in a private lesson.”

“Stacie is wonderful. I started working from home over a year ago, and given the freedom of that I wanted to try to train myself to take some yoga breaks. I took a series of private lessons from Stacie in my home, which was a great way to get myself in the habit of de-stressing throughout the work day. Stacie is very knowledgeable, teaching me about the practice of yoga. And she was great at tailoring lessons to my needs...both my overall goals and just how I might have been feeling that day. She's also very warm & kind and generally nice to be around”

“I have taken classes from Stacie for several years now at the Presidio where she teaches part time. She is thorough and makes sure students get a solid grounding, paying attention to form. She has also taken the time to instruct us in the bigger picture of Yoga, something I found very helpful and not all teachers do. Stacie is very pleasant, paying attention to individuals and tracking their progress as they become more adept. I highly recommend her as a teacher.”

Hello dear Stacie,"I wanted to write this evening and thank you again for our session today. Would you believe that my back is not hurting?! I still have some awkwardness, popping hip joints and pelvic pressure, but the all the pinching and pain are GONE! I am so happy :) I am going to continue and be mindful and gentle, and do some of the exercises you shared with me; as of now I am just shocked with how much better I feel. Thank you thank you thank, you for sharing your amazing healing energy with me! Lots of love, Mona"

“My husband surprised me during my pregnancy, and hired Stacie for some private yoga sessions. She came to our home once a week, and did a fantastic job. I had a condition called "placenta previa", and I was only allowed very light exercise. Yoga was the perfect solution for me, and Stacie guided me through prenatal poses that relieved aches and pain, which are or course the joy that comes packaged with all pregnancies! Stacie also provided me with printed materials so I could practice when she wasn't here. She was always attentive to my energy level, and would construct her session accordingly. I always felt considerably "lighter", physically and emotionally, after our sessions. So, simply, thank you Stacie. And I hope to see you again soon for baby number 2!”
